Sofia Crespo at Art Basel 2024

Virtual Selection, 2023
Tracing the evolution of artistic engagement with artificial intelligence, Fellowship presents Collaborations with the Artificial Self, a 16-artist exhibition showcasing historical firsts like Harold Cohen’s AARON (an early autonomous system for artistic creation) alongside artists like Sofia Crespo who are shaping the space today. Sofia’s video work, Virtual Selection, will be shown alongside six physical cyanotype sheets – exposing the process prints that she used to create the piece.
The work is part of a larger series titled Temporally Uncaptured, which aims to examine the often imperceptible transitions in the life cycles of organisms, such as the microscopic, which often happen at a different temporary scale to ours. With a system of neural networks, Sofia reimagined such transitions in different organisms, whilst printing them by hand using the cyanotype technique and later digitizing them. The resultant videos that make up this series are emblematic of Sofia’s work at the intersection of natural history, science, art and technology, which she has been exploring since 2018. In the context of Fellowship’s exhibition, Sofia’s combination of cyanotypes and self-trained Neural Networks serves to exemplify how what we consider purely digital actually meshes perfectly with traditional techniques.
Virtual Selection comprises a unique video work and six physical cyanotype sheets. For inquiries, please contact hello@artxcode.io.
